What is Cloud Hosted Router - CHR - ?
From the MikroTik Wiki: Wiki: CHR - Cloud Hosted Router
Cloud Hosted Router (CHR) is a RouterOS version that is designed to run as a virtual machine. It supports the x86 64-bit architecture (the RouterOS ISO installation media only supports 32-bit) and can be used on most common hypervisors such as VMWare, Hyper-V, VirtualBox, KVM and others. CHR has all RouterOS features by default, but has a different licensing model than other RouterOS versions.
What about the licenses - RouterOS vs CHR?
With RouterOS, everything is usually tied to the hardware. Once purchased hardware or installed RouterOS loses its license if the data carrier is destroyed or deleted. A new license must then be purchased. There are also differences at levels 4, 5 and 6, e.g. how many tunnels can be opened for PPPoE, OVPN and co: RouterOS Licensing
With CHR, you can delete a CHR instance, operated with a P1 license, for example, on a virtualization environment and reactivate it elsewhere (don't forget backups) without losing the license. The license is transferred from the seller to the user's account at MikroTik, which is stored in the CHR instance (mikrotik.com/client). The upload is also limited for the existing license levels (per port: P1: 1Gbit/s upload, P10: 10Gbit/s upload and P-Unlimited: Unlimited upload) and the update capability of the system is also related to the existing license itself: CHR Licensing
